Your question suggests to me you could be suffering from paralysis of analysis, something all creative suffer from at one point.  It sounds like you are mixing style with design. You are the best judge of what designs would be too similar. Explore and have fun, some rules you should ALWAYS follow, are to be original and creative… and never try to copy other people’s work.
