Hi all!

I am new here and uploaded my first photos recently. All of them were rejected and I have no idea why? I have an example here and I would love to hear feedback for future refrence 🙂 ty

There seems to be consensus on the sharpness.

I would also say that the bridge is overexposed. Night pictures with lights like this are difficult to take. I indeed use different exposure in a case like this, but I rarely go for HDR processing. There is always an issue with moving objects. Normally, I choose one picture and edit that one. And very often it's more on the darker side than on the lighter side.

Thanks so much for the advice, I have been taking photos for years but am self taught. Always learning and trying to improve. Thanks again for the advice 🙂

You're welcome. If you are at a location, even if it is "only" for a souvenir picture, take brackets if you can afford them (memory card space). Choose then the best of the three or five to edit. And I can assure you, it is more often then not the one that is slightly underexposed (according to the camera measurements).

Understanding the DOF is very important, and setting the camera manually (aperture and exposure) is the key to success. I'm now so used to my manual settings, that I use that even for event shooting. It's not that difficult as it looks like.

Well, I suppose you shoot raw, if not, it's highly recommended.

For night shoots you will need a tripod and a remote trigger (cable or RC is not important). If you acquire a tripod, acquire one that is light enough to take with you. The most stable tripod as no value, if it stays at home, because it is too heavy.

I agree that the bridge should be focused better. However, I think the problem is exposure. Which is typical with long exposures when bright lights are also available. You should use HDR here. Three different exposures merged into one. That wil darken your highlights and lighten your shadows. Also reduce the noise in the shadows.

It seems you attempted to do a long exposure to blur the water, but the result is that the entire image is blurry. Should have used a tripod...

Thanks for your answer, this photo was actually the wrong one but I agree. Had no tripod with me on that trip and it was 3am and windy xD I will look at my photos more closely before trying to upload.

I'm not sure where your main point of focus is. The bridge, I assume, but it's not focused well. Nothing in the image is sharp.

i mean, of course the bridge lol what else would it be? haha I agree though, thanks for your response. I uploaded to wrong one but it was a rough night on the Harbour. I will be sure to double check my photos before uploading. All a learning curve

"I mean, of course the bridge lol what else would it be?"

I've been doing this for over two years. You'd be surprised. 🙂
