I'm sorry if I didn't find an existing post that covers this.
I just wonder why content that I uploaded 4-11 months ago is still pending review, whereas more recent content is reviewed.

This is a common issue. Delete the assets, rename the files so that they are treated as new, and resubmit. Copy titles and keywords before you delete the files.
