Why were these image not accepted?

I am often left totally perplexed as to why an image has been rejected for qulity issues, which makes it difficult t

o avoid issues in the future. So can the hive mind give their opion of these images and what I can do to improve them in the future please.

the first photo is too dark and the names on the door should be removed.

The second photo the subject (bridge) is not in focus.
