Cross-Product Creative Challenge #14: High End Magazine Ad

Alan Gilbertson and I have put together this Cross Product Creative Challenge
Welcome to a new Cross-Product Creative Challenge! Thanks to everyone who participated with such great creations in the movie poster challenge.

This time we’re switching from action movies to fashion. (NOTE: This is not a prompt challenge. There are other challenges for that.)

The Challenge [Read all of it!]:

Design a high-end magazine ad for wealthy, non-alien animals—any creature will do, so long as it lives on Earth. Start in Firefly or Boards or Express or Photoshop, but DO NOT stop at a prompt. There are quality details (lighting, contrast, composition) and content details you will have to get right.

Guidelines:

  • A prompt is not enough. Layer your assets and refine your composition. Treat Firefly and partner models as collaborators. Use prompts to generate assets you can put together in an ad.
  • Think like an art director. What’s the story here? Who are the audience and what is the marketing message?
  • It’s a Cross-Product Challenge! Use Photoshop, Illustrator, Substance, Adobe Express, Fresco—whatever tools will help you build the scene.
  • Share your process. Tell us how you created it. What tools did you use? How did you refine your idea? What choices did you make?

    Wolfless Philippines!

As a graphic designer in the Philippines, we are often trained to view our local nature through a very specific lens: bright greens, tropical blues, and sun-drenched landscapes. For this project, I wanted to completely subvert those expectations.

This is the concept cover for LOBO Magazine. The headline asks a fascinating geographical question: Why are there no wolves in the Philippines?

To answer this visually, I created a stark paradox. I used Adobe Firefly and Photoshop to place a heavily textured, arctic predator into a dark, cinematic space, overlaid directly against a subtle vector map of our islands. The brand name itself, LOBO, plays on our local vocabulary while maintaining a premium, global editorial feel.

By moving away from typical tropical design tropes and leaning into high-contrast, moody typography and complex textures, this cover doesn't just inform—it demands attention on a newsstand. It proves that local editorial concepts can be handled with a sleek, world-class aesthetic. Thank you.

AI Generation (Adobe Firefly): Generated a high-fidelity, expressive wolf portrait with specific low-key lighting to emphasize texture and mood.

Photoshop Execution: Crafted a deep, dark environment that seamlessly blends complex fur textures with fine-line background vector maps. The composition uses strict typographic hierarchy, utilizing a massive, bold title ("ALPHA") acting as a frame for the subject.

    Hey @Jewelson™

I love the whole concept and how you turned/ subverted the typical expectations. At first I didn’t see the islands. Once I opened the image/ made it larger the subtleties of the islands are there.

An investigative research: Why have the wolves conquered the Philippians? Discover the natural barriers. Love this intriguing concept. What barriers are there? How would the Philippians be different?

Mind you you have a few other predators in the ocean. Those crystal clear waters are not all sandy and calm.

    cheers

Thanks Nate. The barriers are - “there are no barriers!” Philippines are too expose from the ocean and the scorching sun. And yes the beaches are not all sandy and calm. 😎

    Why this cover?
I made this cover because satire works best when it doesn't have to explain itself. A wolf in a suit, snarling politely for the camera, says more about Wall Street excess than a thousand words of op-ed ever could — it's the "wolf in sheep's clothing" idea turned inside out, except the wolf isn't even bothering to hide anymore. He's front-page news. He's getting the exclusive interview. He's arms crossed, confident, dressed for a boardroom he clearly owns.

The headlines are doing the real work underneath the joke. "Bonuses Over Ethics," "Greed Without Guardrails," "The Hunt Continues" — these aren't just puns on the wolf imagery, they're pointed at a real pattern: crises happen, promises get made about reform, and then the incentives that caused the mess in the first place quietly survive intact. Putting that critique on a glossy, aspirational-looking magazine cover — the kind you'd see at an airport newsstand — makes the point sharper. It mimics the exact aesthetic of confident success that this kind of culture sells about itself, then turns it into an indictment.

A cover that's fun to look at earns a longer look, and a longer look is where the actual critique lands

    About the process
First, I created a quick sketch of my main character in Photoshop using images from Adobe Stock. I used this sketch as a reference image in Firefly Boards to generate a consistent image with “studio” lighting that fits well with the editorial style.
It’s impressive how a simple prompt and a rough sketch can produce such a high-quality image!
Prompt used: “Generate an image similar to the reference image for a magazine cover. A bust shot of a businessman with his arms crossed, wearing a dark suit and sporting a menacing wolf’s head. A dark gray textured background and studio lighting. Editorial image style.”
Back in Photoshop to work with the generated image.
A few adjustments to optimize sharpness and lighting, and I created a small grid to strategically place my titles and headers. By the way, I used the “Acumin Pro Extracondensed” font from Adobe Fonts.

@fbeaume I look forward to seeing your creations, critiques, and creative take on everyday items like a magazine. So true about business it is a hunt for prey and wolf eat wolf world. This image would definitely turn heads at an airport, train station, or bus station as well as a news stand.

Certainly appreciate you taking us from concept to the finished product. Sketching out an image/ idea and then bringing the pieces all together. This attention to detail shows. It helps keep our mind focused on the creation not those random shinny things.

Exclusive Interview from the Pack leader: definitely a lovely touch. The colours compliment the cover and idea.

    Thanks for sharing and participating

I started with the Fi AI assistant generating the penguin, glacial background and Aurora along with a penguin facing perpendicular with a bowtie to trace in Illustrator for the logo. Then I pieced it all together/adjusted in PS.

It was really hard to stay in my lane with Boreal Tuxedos because I really wanted to switch to Emperor Tuxedos.

    Hey @Turtle.PSD

Great to see you participating in the monthly challenge. I love the concept and the attention to detail the Aurora in the background adds a lovely touch of elegance and flare.

The Logo definitely stands out, just wondering if having it a bit smaller in the corner or something to prevent taking away from the hero image.

The gradient and the colours definitely match the Aurora and the vibe.

    thanks

    Hey @DeanUtian

Awe!!! Sleep Kola. The birds sitting in the background add a lovely touch. The outback is full of surprises and interesting stories.

Love the green and yellow choice for the letters. 16 pages of maps: you know you are going places.

have you been to Australia? Definitely recommend going especially Tasmania. It’s an unspoiled island w mystery and awe lurking around the next bend.

    Thanks Nate ( @Oh.N8 )

I live in Sydney, Australia. Australia is a beautiful country. I paint and sketch as a hobby and have created work with a similar subject to the poster I had here. I was actually describing that artwork in my initial prompt. The AI image is similar but also quite different to my art.

Australia’s national colours are Green and Gold (yellow’ish). So he colours in the in mt CC#14 go correspond well to an Aussie character beyond the animals.

Glad you enjoyed what I created.

This is a really interesting creative challenge. I like how it encourages people to think beyond the usual design ideas and create something that feels professional and unique. I am also interested in learning more about how other designers approach high-end magazine ad designs and what creative techniques they use.

    Concept
    Title: The Velvet Burrow
Ad Type: High-end magazine fashion/lifestyle ad
    Audience: Wealthy, elegant earth animals
Hero Animal: A black rabbit styled like an old-money fashion icon

    Magazine Ad Idea
A glossy luxury magazine ad featuring a black rabbit seated inside a velvet-lined private lounge. The rabbit wears a tiny pearl collar and sits beside a gold-trimmed carrot cocktail glass. The background is deep burgundy velvet, warm spotlighting, polished marble floor, and a small serif headline:

    THE VELVET BURROW
Private tailoring for creatures of uncommon taste.

    Small footer copy:

Bespoke collars. Silk-lined nests. Midnight appointments only.

    Tools / Process Description
I started in Adobe Firefly to generate separate visual assets: the black rabbit, velvet lounge background, pearl collar, and luxury props. I treated the AI results as raw material rather than the final ad.

Then I brought the best assets into Photoshop, removed backgrounds, adjusted lighting, and composited the rabbit into the lounge scene. I added soft shadows under the rabbit and matched the warm highlight direction so it felt like one photographed setup.

In Illustrator, I created the magazine layout system: elegant serif headline, thin gold rules, luxury spacing, and small editorial-style footer text. Finally, I assembled the finished ad in Adobe Express to test the vertical magazine composition and export the final version.

Promopt For The Main Image: A high-end luxury magazine advertisement featuring an elegant black rabbit sitting in a velvet private lounge, wearing a delicate pearl collar, deep burgundy velvet background, warm golden spotlight, marble floor, old-money fashion aesthetic, refined editorial photography, luxury fragrance campaign mood, dramatic contrast, elegant composition, no text, no logo

Very impressive. The velveteer bunny ?? the pearls and carrot cocktail definitely adds a refined touch.  I love the choice of the fonts. Definitely has an element eloquence and sophistication.

Private tailoring for creatures of uncommon taste cute and bit sassy. love it!

The dark wood and hues definitely give the magazine cover out of the Rabitz.

Thank you for breaking down the thought process and the workflow. This definitely is going to help others looking to get into the concept art/ magazine idea. Showing the mental breakdown of the outcome really helps. Thanks for sharing.

    Cheers

Wow!!! @Henrik Heigl This is very impressive and incredibly adorable. You definitely hit this one out of the park. I love the extra attention to the faded code and edges on the pages.

The font is very beautiful. Which font is this?

How did you go about making this? Did you use FF or a partner model for the image?
Curious how you went about putting it all together: Illustrator, InDesign, PS or a combo?

    Cheers
