I want an image without a background—in PNG format—but I keep getting PNGs with a white background or a checkerboard pattern behind it (which just simulates transparency). Any solutions?

If you are typing in your prompt to make the image transparent, that will not work. Have you tried removing the background in image edit:

which then can be saved:
