New Firefly interface: More effort, less usability

New Firefly interface: More effort, less usability

I’m a professional designer and illustrator and have been using Adobe software for many years. Increasingly, I spend more time figuring out new interfaces and finding familiar functions than doing the actual creative work. Who benefits from these changes if they make everyday work harder?

The new Firefly interface is a clear example:

  • I can no longer simply open a generated image in a large preview. Instead, I’m taken into editing mode.

  • From there, I can edit the image, but I cannot directly generate another variation using my original setup.

  • My original style references were not carried over. Only the generated image remained as a reference.

  • I can only reach the previous, clearer interface through a direct link. I haven’t found a menu option for it.

These are basic steps: generate, inspect the result, adjust the prompt, and generate again using the same references. That process should be quick and reliable.

For months now, I’ve only used Adobe’s AI tools when my other tools cannot get the job done. For my tasks, other image generation and editing applications often deliver better results and are easier to use.

I find this particularly disappointing from a company whose software is built for designers, illustrators, and other creative professionals. Creating and working with images is central to what we do. Yet getting to the result feels increasingly complicated.

I find the constant interface changes in other Adobe applications disruptive as well. New features are welcome. But when familiar workflows disappear or become more complicated, the result is additional work rather than progress.

Even finding this forum required help from a non-Adobe AI assistant. That says a lot about how confusing Adobe’s navigation has become. The overall interface feels fragmented and chaotic, turning even basic tasks into a search for the right page or control.

Please provide a permanently accessible classic interface, a straightforward large image preview, and reliable preservation of prompts, models, and references. Stable, efficient workflows deserve at least as much attention as new features.

It’s even worse today. Now not only does it delete all reference images after editing an image it also deletes your prompt. Fun! So every prompt has to be copied for when the new interface eats it. More fun!  After the image is edited, the field is blank and all reference images are gone. This is a shitshow.

The changes are inexplicable because when you try to reverse engineering them to determine what they were fixing or improving it is difficult to find an improvement.

I can’t judge the technical side, but I agree with your point. I haven’t noticed any major improvements in the quality of Adobe’s own AI over the past few months.

What bothers me more than the AI’s quality, though, is the increasingly poor usability. It feels like a toddler playing with building blocks, constantly rearranging things at random.

Testing new ideas is important, but there was a time when that happened internally. These days, it feels like paying customers are being used as beta testers.

I used to look forward to major updates. I genuinely enjoyed trying out the new features. It was like opening a new book — a sense of anticipation, followed by surprise and delight.

These days, I put off installing updates because my first thought is more likely to be: “Oh God, what have they changed this time?”

Come to think of it, I find the partner models more interesting anyway. With Nano Banana, I get better results that are closer to what I’m aiming for than with the Firefly model. I mainly use Adobe’s own model directly in Photoshop to remove elements and retouch images.

For the partner models, Adobe primarily provides the interface. That makes it all the more frustrating when that interface becomes harder to use.

I do agree with a few of your points. Something I really miss is artistic side of characters found in Models 2 and 3. Previous models would provide characters that would need a bit of cleaning up; however, the result was something fun and interesting.

The interface is definitely a bit confusing, I will agree. I get the impression we are being  push use to FF boards as the primary tool. Sometimes I just need an image or do something quick.

Exactly. I feel like they want to remove the old clearer interface because kling 4.0 has never been added to the list of videomodels in the clearer [better more intuitive] interface. I don't see why the different interfaces can't live together side by side like they were when this new interface was in beta.

Just removing the basic option to open a older generation from generation history baffles me .

I feel like they just want to make it more difficult  so you can't work fast so they want to save compute cost. It feels like it is designed for that.

New interface is laggy and illogical.

Me and my team are now locked in for a year.Together.we pay 24.000 euro to adobe this year. And after 2 months after numerous bugs slowly being fixed, they just wipe everything off the table and give us this new unworkable new interface. Wich is a RAM nightmare.

Time is money. Our output as a company has drastically reduced.Just because we can't do basic features anymore having to start from scratch. If we want to reference an older generation as a start point.

It took them so long to add a search box to the generation.History and now the new interface doesn't have a search box. Having to scroll to thousands of clips just to get to one when I could just have easily just searched for it?\nIs an unacceptable time consuming task?We have to do right now. At the same time the older stand alone , generation history does only allow us to open a clip in edit mode.Like it's just another video and not generation with all the metadata reference images , prompt text.

My subscription also renewed for another year in September. Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Premiere are still useful tools for my work, although I could list quite a few problems that have developed over the past months and years. But that is another discussion.

Fortunately, I mainly need images and rarely need video. The credit-based approach to video generation makes little sense to me: spending hundreds of credits on an attempt without knowing whether the result will be usable. By the time I get a suitable clip, my standard monthly allowance could already be gone.

My current workaround is to develop the image with ChatGPT first, then use Adobe to adjust specific details. At least with ChatGPT, I can discuss the idea and clarify what I want before generating anything. With Adobe, it often feels like a gamble whether my prompt will produce a useful result.

Given Adobe’s long-standing role in professional graphics software, I find it particularly disappointing how poorly its AI interprets reference images and translates their visual style into usable results for my work.

On top of the inconsistent results comes this interface: a bewildering mix of buttons, controls, unexpected navigation and unclear icons. Settings seem to change, references disappear when switching views, and I keep having to figure out where I am and how to get back.

I cannot know whether any of this is deliberate. But it increasingly feels as though keeping users inside an ecosystem and promoting additional services takes priority over helping them work efficiently.
