I have the same problem. I use a 9:16 first frame, but selecting the 9:16 ratio simply changes before my eyes to 16:9. Changing it back simply repeats back to 16:9.
Rival products using Veo3 have no such problems.

    Hi PaulusMaximus,

Thank you for sharing this with us.

Would it be possible for you to provide a short recording of this behavior? That would greatly help us investigate the issue further.

    Hi Benjus,

    Thank you for flagging this.

To understand the behavior, I ran two tests using the same model and aspect ratio you mentioned, and here’s what I found:

    1. When using a reference image, I reproduced the same error: “An aspect ratio of 16:9 and a duration of 8 seconds is required to generate when using reference images with Veo 3.1. Please update your general settings and try again.” This makes sense because an 8‑second generation with a reference image requires a 16:9 (widescreen) aspect ratio, not 9:16 (vertical).
Error generating with the reference image
    1. When using the image as a keyframe, the result was different, it successfully generated an 8‑second video with the 9:16 (vertical) aspect ratio. This seems like a good option if you’d like to keep that format.
    Successful generation with keyframes

I hope this helps clarify things. If you still run into issues, let us know, we’ll be happy to dig deeper.
