Change format for dates in email templates

I've been driving myself crazy trying to figure out how to change the format for date variables in email templates.

For example, the [CourseCompletionDate] variable shows up in the email formatted like "Sat Nov 30 2019". Is there way to change the format to "November 30, 2019"? what about "11/30/2019"?
