Question

What is the purpose of the instance deadline

I am trying to set up courses that would allow learners to only sign up till a certain date.  I thought I could use instance deadline, but this field is not changeable.  How would I accomplish stopping leaners from signing up.  And what is the purpose of the instance deadline?

Every learning object has a default instance and its deadline is never ending, this default deadline cannot be edited unless the course has a classroom module. Admin can add a new instance and and change its deadline. The deadline is an indication that learner has to complete the course before the deadline. It cannot control signing up to the course because even if one instance's deadline is expired, default instance will be present and learner can enroll into the course.

If you want to stop learners from enrolling into the course, then you need to retire the course. Retiring cannot be scheduled, hence Admin will have to change the course state on that date.

I hope this clarifies the concept of instance deadline.

Is there any sort of functionality change that happens when a course expires? I would love if after the expiration date a learner was no longer able to complete unfinished modules, or at least a way to know that a task was completed after the due date.

The instance deadline is editable at the time of creation, and until a course has been assigned that uses that particular instance. Not sure it's what you want though. Escalating this question.
