bloated iPhone app size

I have scanned 10 documents using the Adobe Scan app.  These files take up 52.4 MB when they are viewed in the Adobe Document Cloud. However, when I check the size of the Adobe Scan app on my iPhone, it is taking up 409 MB (68.4 MB for the App Size and 340.4 MB for the Documents & Data).

Why do 52.4 MB of pdf files take up 340.4 MB on my iPhone?

Do Adobe staff monitor these forums?  I thought this would be my best chance at received some accurate information...
