What is that data size?

I am using android version, and I am saving all files online, the app itself is like 90mb, but the data size is 1,2gb. I suspect it is saving files somewhere in internal storage, but no clue where they are.

Is this size normal? What happens if I clear data? What is that data anyway?

Can anyone explain it?
