Unable to drag and drop images into Adobe XD on Windows machine.

Hello Adobe Support,

I've been working with our IT department because my Adobe XD software doesn't allow me to drag and drop images into Adobe XD. I have to manually import them and then mask the images with shapes. I have been following your support forums, and we updated the GPU on my laptop and we're still running into issues. I am receiving a canceled symbol when trying to drag the images into XD. I am running Adobe XD on Windows 10. I can provide any specs you need to help troubleshoot.

Thanks,
Rosendo Figueroa

Hi Ashraf,

We're so sorry for all the trouble. Could you please try the steps shared on this discussion: https://community.adobe.com/t5/adobe-xd/can-t-drag-images-into-xd/td-p/9205660?page=1

If that doesn't work, I'd request if you can log in to the Hidden Admin account (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EfbMs3w-Z3s&t=53s) and check how the application works.

Regards

Rishabh

Thank you, For your information I resolved myself by Installing New OS on my pc

I have same problem but my computer doesn't show the option ' Make changes to your account'

i think it's because the corporate computer has security setting.

I can not find any other solution 😞

Hi, I confirm that drag and drop works correctly. Which version of Adobe XD are you using? Does this problem occur only with a specific file or also with other files?

Hola comunidad adobe!

Estoy teniendo un problema algo grave con el programa, cuando intento arrastrar una imagen desde una carpeta del escritorio hacia el area de trabajo de Adobe XD, me aparece un simbolo de prohibido.
A alguien mas le pasa? Existe alguna solucion a dicho problema?

Mi sistema operativo es Windows 10,

What file type are you trying to drag across? Some file types can not be dragged.
For example an .ai file can be imported, but if you try to drag it will not work.

Greetings:

Sorry to hear you're experiencing issues with XD. In the past we've seen similar problems be solved by ensuring your GPU drivers are up to date.

If this doesn't solve your issue, let us know. Be sure to include your OS and XD version.

Thanks!

Hi everyone. I recently installed XD on my work device, and I'm having a problem that looks to be an older issue but I'm not having any luck fixing on my own. I cannot drag any files directly into my projects as I'm supposed to be able to. I started with the intro tutuorial and could not complete the steps to drag image files into the the project. I know there are older conversations about similar problems, but I have not been successful with any of the suggested fixes.

My device is on a corporate network, permissions are limited in certain folders (including the WindowsApps folder in which XD is installed - I cannot edit anything in this folder). I've tried a couple different registry key changes, as suggested in other threads, such as changing the EnableLUA key from 1 to 0 (and back to 1 again since that didn't work). Drivers appear to be up to date, Windows version and Chrome version are up to date...I'm stumped.

Does anyone have a suggestion I can bring to my IT department?

FYI:

I can drag and drop into other apps and also between file explorer windows. This is the only app affected. My device is HP Elitebook, intel Core i7 vPro 7th Gen, 16 GB RAM, 64 bit OS, Windows 10 Enterprise (version 1803, OS build 17134.1304).

Any info at all is helpful. Thank you!

Brandon

Hi LXD_Brandon,

This appears to be strange and I haven't seen in recent past. I'll try my best to get this fixed for you.

Would you mind confirming if you are using XD 27.1 or XD 27.2? Go to help menu and click on About XD, you should have this information there. I'd also like to know if source from where you are trying to drag the image and its destination as well. Like, is it an object or an artboard?

Awaiting your response.

Thanks,

Thanks, Atul. Fortunately, this drag-and-drop feature is now working. Unfortunately, I'm not sure which "fix" actually worked. I tried all the different registry key updates, unistalled and reinstalled again, and a few other things that were suggested by others. If I were to guess what worked based on the timing of when the feature started working, I think it could have been resetting the Microsoft "App Installer" app as suggested by community member danielg70823056 in the very last comment of this thread here: https://community.adobe.com/t5/get-started/i-can-t-install-adobe-xd/td-p/10067054?page=1.

By the way, my XD version is 27.2.12.4. CC Sync 4.3.28.24. Thanks.

When I add a rectangle or circular container to my document I used to be able to directly place an image file into this by dragging it directly onto the container. It would automatically place inside that container and automatically fit the size of the container. What happens now is that it sometimes refuses to do so, instead its just placed outside on the document canvas with it's original size. When that happens the only way I'm able to insert the image into the container is to use the mask feature, but that's not what I want. This is obviously a bug cause 10 minutes later I do the exact same thing on the exact same document on the same computer with the exact same files but then it works...until it suddenly doesn't again. I have tried dragging image files without having the container selected and with, also tried to drag and drop from different image viewers like Bridge and IrfanWiev, Windows file explorer but that doesn't return any different result. It happens with both square containers, circular and square containers with altered corner radius. I've tried gif, png, jpg and svg. When it works all these formats works BUT I'm not able to replace them by drag and drop if they are different file formats, so if I drag a svg file to replace a png file nothing happens - I need to swap it with something that has identical file format. Another thing that's not working is removing an image file when it's inside a container. I can double click it and reposition it but if I delete it the whole container get's deleted. I also observe that sometimes files that are replaced aren't really gone cause the old one is there but just moved outside the container area, if I double click the new image the old on re-appears outside the position it used to have. When I let go the box it's no longer visible. It's messy business this container thing.

Also, I used to be able to directly drag and drop both ai and eps files into XD but that's no longer possible at all. Now I'm back to what used to be the common rule, namely to open those files in Illustrator and do a copy and paste routine. So now it's back to that again?

XD Ver. 22.0.12.12 on W10.

Hi there,

We're sorry to hear you're facing trouble using Adobe XD and unable to drag and drop images into the container. Could you please share the Gif or video of the workflow, so that we can try to replicate at our end? I would also request you to please update XD to the latest version (22.1.12.5) and let us know if that helps.

Awaiting your response.

Thanks,

Harshika

The XD update wasn't available to me when I wrote the post, but the update didn't change anything. Still the same issues. Actually it's normally the updates that carries the problems. I don't have any video capture software but I think I described the issues pretty detailed.

I fixed the same issue on my PC. This is the instruction (tested on Win10):

1. Open start menu and type in search field "Control panel". You need classic view.

2. Switch view to "Small icons" using "View by: Category" selector in the top right corner.

3. Go to "User accounts"

4. In pop-up select "Change user account control settings"

5. Set value as shown below and click "Ok"

6. Restart Windows and enjoy.

I

For those who are under some domain rules in corporate environment, I open regedit and here:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System

change EnableLUA to 1 … after restart I can drag and drop between Windows Universal Apps. But after another restart my domain overwrite this and have to do it again.

So better ask your admins to solve this for you on domain server side – I am not that lucky.

The System File Checker method was very tedious.

But from how it looked, it seemed to be an issue in the explorer and not in Adobe Xd. So, I simply restarted my explorer from Task Manager and it worked. I was able to go back to dragging and dropping images into Xd.
