22.4 breaks custom work spaces

Question

In previous verisons, you could copy your modified workspaces into the new prefernece folder and continue working. It was a pain but it worked.

This no longer is the issue, 22.4 ignores your modified workspaces and creates a new one that is the default space no matter what you do.

Anyone figured out a way around this?

Instead of copying your workspace files manually, have you tried migrating your preferences from the previous version? You get a dialog the first time you install a new version with new prefs, but you can always go to the bottom of Preferences > General and migrate manually. I haven't had any issues with my workspaces moving forward versions.
