Adjustment layer in a collapsed precomp doesn't work with mattes

I'm trying to create a color correction setup for the same footage but in several different formats, so it would be much easier to just set it up once and be sure it's consistent in all formats.

I thought this should be achievable by having an adjustment layer inside a precomp which would be used in different formats. This is working, but the moment I apply a matte to the precomp the adjustment layer stops working completely. Maybe this is an expected behaviour but it also feels weird, since other elements in a collapsed precomps work completly fine with mattes.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Correct answer Rick Gerard

You are faced with a rendering order problem. A better option would be to use the Essential Properties Workspace and set up your Color Correction as an adjustment layer, then Copy the layer with Property Links and paste it into the other comps. Now, controlling the Color correction in the main comp will also control the color in the other comps. The EGP gives you an easy way to manipulate the controls no matter what comp you are looking at.

Thank you both for your help. Your tip Rick about copying with property links was spot on! Thank you so much for this!

Hi Coolguy

This is actually intended behavior, although it may not be messaged correctly.

A precomp with collapse transforms on renders as if all the layers in the precomp were in the layer stack in the position of that layer.

A precomp with collapse transforms off renders as if it's a single layer, like you exported the precomp to a PSD and reimported it.

The issue here is that adding a mask or a matte requires the render engine to render to a frame, since only frames can be masked or matted.
