Advanced>Based On dropdown seems to have no effect (lines/words/characters)

in AE 2023, when animating some text, the Advanced>Based On dropdown seems to have no effect (lines/words/characters) - is this due to a different implementation, or a bug, or am I suffering from severe sleep deprivation?
