AE and AE Render Engine won't run simultaneously – v23.6 and v24.0.1

Hello,

I'm no longer able to run AE Render Engine when AE app is already running in the latest versions – v23.6 or v24.0.1. If I launch AE Render Engine with AE running, the system will just jump to the running AE app instance. This means I can't run both the AE app and the AE Render Engine simultaneously.

I'm running AE v23.6 or v24.0.1 on macOS Ventura 13.5 on an Apple M2 Max.

In previous versions, it was possible to run both the AE app and the AE Render Engine at the same time, provided AE app was launched first and then AE Render Engine.

Now the system just gets stuck on whatever app is launched first – app or render engine. Running both simultaneously is crucial for the efficiency of my operation.

Anyone else experiencing this? Any idea why this may be happening and how to fix it?

[ Note that this is not the instance where AE is running as a render only node – when there is a ae_render_only_node.txt file on the docs folder. ]

Thank you,
Nuno

Correct answer ToolfarmJP

My mac OS is still Monterey. I do it like this in the terminal app.

open /Applications/Adobe\ After\ Effects\ 2023/Adobe\ After\ Effects\ Render\ Engine\ 2023.app -n

open /Applications/Adobe\ After\ Effects\ 2023/Adobe\ After\ Effects\ 2023.app -n

According my Activity Monitor, I can see two After Effects lines with different PID each.

Hi ToolfarmJP,

Many thanks for your response.

That works! I'm now able to run the two applications simultaneously using your method.
It works for both v23.6 and v24.0.1.

For future reference, if someone comes across the same issue, when I tried it, this only worked in the order supplied by ToolfarmJP:
          1. Open AE render engine through Terminal
          2. Open AE app through Terminal

When I did it in the reverse order, I got the same issue as before and the system just jumped to the AE app when I tried launching the render engine.

Thanks again ToolfarmJP, much appreciated!

Kind regards,
Nuno
