I updated AE and started a completely new project, and it seems to have fixed it. It no longer crashes.

Could you share a bit more detail to help narrow it down? Does it happen in a new blank project too, and are any third-party plugins or specific media formats involved? Also, are there any crash reports or error messages?

It happens on a new project too. There are no 3rd party plug-ins or specific media formats. There are no crash reports or error messages, it just says it has to close down. This is a recent development, it always used to work OK with this type of footage and this type of project (I am Rotobrushing).
