AE crashes while previewing 4K footage

Hi

Please help! I've imported 4K footage into AE and it crashes while I try to preview it. I've tried cranking up the amount of memory AE can use and I've re-rendered the files from .mp4 to .mov. It seems to crash when one of the video layer starts.

The comp the footage is in won't render. In AE the software crashes and AME the render fails. Both softwares are up to date.

My computer specs:

Windows 10

Intel i-9

CPU 2.90 GHz

RAM 32GB

Footage specs:

3840 x 2160 px

Data rate: 53776kbps

Total bitrate: 55298 kbps

Is there something I should be looking out for with 4K footage? Any suggestions would be great!

Thanks

Yes, there should be enough memory for the OS to keep it operational. On my system, Win10 takes 4GB after booting alone, without doing anything than idling.

Usual 4k is no problem, despite longer rendering times. I worked with 5.7k footage lately.

So, here we go:

Can you watch the video outside AE with any media player?

Do you have any effects applied to the video?

Can you preview the video in the source panel?

Can you preview the comp, if you lower the resolution?

What is the AME error message in the log file?

Can you render the video to PNG image sequence?

Thanks for your reply!

To answer your questions:

- My computer was having difficulties reading the file with a media player, so I put a file on my main hard drive and it worked fine. I collected the project and put it onto my main hard drive and it's giving me the same problem.

- I have two adjustment layers: one for keying out the green screen and another for color correction. Deactivating them doesn't seem to make a difference though.

- Yup sources preview fine.

- I lowered the resolution to render every 8 pixels, it can't preview

- The log file says:

Export Error

Error compiling movie.

Render Error

Render returned error.

Writing with exporter: H.264

Writing file type: H264

Around timecode: 00:00:04:11 - 00:00:04:13

Rendering at offset: 3.837 seconds

Component: H.264 of type Exporter

Selector: 9

Error code: -1609629695

- It crashes when I try to render PNG. Also crashes after I precomp the layer by itself.

What do you think could be the issue?

Thank you!

Could be a damaged video file - is there something suspicious around TC 4:11 - 4:13?

Does the PNG export crashes on the first frame or later?

For further investigation, create a blank new project, purge all caches, import the 4k file and put it into a comp. Does this preview, render, export?
