Question

AE File not opening on Mac, but does on PC

I am relatively new to AE, but havent had this issue before.
I have a few files that simply crash when trying to open on mac. They get to about 40% (although that varies slightly file to file, but seem to be in that region), but then just get the spinning beach ball and they dont progress. I have a PC too, so installed AE on that and the file opens instantly with no issue. Resaved the file from the PC version, tried to open that on Mac but crashed again.

I have tried;
• Opening file from different locations on the computer
• Safe Mode
• Empty Caches
• Reset Prefs
• Uninstall, restart, reinstall

But nothing works. Baffled, especially where it opens immediately on PC, which would rule out file corruption. Files were all created on the same Mac that now wont open them.

Any ideas?

    Hi Miles, sorry to hear about the issue.

    A few things that would help narrow it down:

    1. Your exact AE version on both Mac and Windows (Help > About on each). If they don't match, worth aligning them.

    2. Is the file stored on your Mac's local drive, or on a network/external drive? If external, have you tried copying it to the local drive and opening from there?

    3. Any error messages that appear, either before AE hangs or if you force-quit and try again?

    4. Try importing the file into a new blank project instead of opening it directly. Launch AE on the Mac, File > New Project, then File > Import > File and pick the problem .aep. Sometimes this bypasses issues that occur during a direct open.

    Let us know what you find.

    Thanks,

    Nishu

    Hi Nishu

    Thanks for your reply. In response to your questions;

    1. Mac: 26.3.2, PC: 26.3.0 (the latest version it says I can install and was installed today - PC opens fine, Mac doesnt want to know)
    2. Stored on local external ssd - have tried copying it to desktop and from a separate removable drive. No networked drives.
    3. I don’t get any error messages at all, it just beach balls and becomes unresponsive. I have tried just leaving it too, but no joy.
    4. Tried this method, but it hangs again. Also tried moving the file away from the assets folder, but it hangs still.

    Thanks
    Miles

    Could you let us know what format media files you’re using?

    Hi Rob
    There are a mix of media files within the .aep file, primarily .mp4 and .mov files though.
    Its odd as it doesnt hesitate on the PC, opens straight up.
