Question

AE not working after update to version 18.4

Hey guys,

I have been unable to use After Effects since I updated it to version 18.4 the other day. The program will open, but as soon as I move the mouse or click on anything, I get the spinning rainbow that spins until I force quit. Is anyone else having these issues?

I held down Cntrl Alt and shift upon launching the new f***ing update, it worked!! (I think it resets preferences) This was after uninstalling, resinstalling, trying an older version etc and wasting my life for a few hours. Thanks Adobe. We need to bill you for time wasting. ;D

I'm having the exact same issue. I reinstalled 18.2.1 and it's working fine. I guess I'll wait for 18.4.1...

Hi rjl89,

Sorry for your issue.

Do you see any error messages? What are your system specifications (CPU, GPU, RAM, OS)? Also, how do you launch After Effects - by clicking its icon or by double-clicking the project file?

You could try resetting the preferences as basic maintenance. Here's how: https://community.adobe.com/t5/after-effects/faq-how-to-reset-trash-preferences-in-after-effects/td-p/10634342

Looking forward to your response.

Thanks,
Nishu

Hey Nishu,

Thanks for your quick response!

I am not seeing any kind of error messages & I am using Mac OS Catalina version 10.15.7.

I've tried to launch AE by clicking the icon, double-clicking the project file & trying to open it from the Creative Cloud's update panel & I have the same issue with all ways of launching the program. I thought it may have been from some scripts I had installed around the same time as the update, but I've cleared those out & not experienced a difference in the launch.

I tried to reset the preferences, but I can't access them as as soon as AE opens, I get the spinning rainbow & can't click on anything. Should I just uninstall & reinstall to see if that works?

Sorry for the delay, rjl89.

Sure, you can give reinstalling a try. If that doesn't work, try removing the third-party plug-ins from the MediaCore folder. Go to the following location and remove all the files and folders (except dummy.txt): HD/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Common/Plugins/7.0/MediaCore

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks,

Nishu
