AE preview screen is black

I am trying to complete a tutorial within AE. I started last week and it was fine, now its just black in the preview and I can't do anything. Drivers are all up to date, restarted the software. Not tried anything else as I'm a newbie and not sure what I'm doing. I am not sure if I have included the right info below, so please let me know if I haven't. Thank you in advance.

Boring standard answer: Check your hardware acceleration settings and update your graphics driver. also clean out the disk caches and let AE rebuild them.

Hi Mylenium, thank you for responding to my message. It's not on all videos which I find strange. I updated my graphics driver. I don't know how to do the other things please can you give a little more detail? Thank you again
