ae project file has 0 items

Question

my project files open but nothing shows "0 items." happens on some but not all files on my mac and im not sure what the pattern is. i have tried two different versions of ae, 2020 & 2021 and different ways of opening it. any ideas why this is happening?

Without any specific info on what the original project files contained, in which version(s) they were created, how and where they were stored, exact system info and so on nobody can tell you much. This seems rather weird, but may simply boil down to the many bugs and oddities that plague Macs these days like botched folder permissions and such...
