AE rendering not using all PC power

Hi there,

 

I am wondering why do I bother with 2x 2080 ti, Ryzen 5950x with 16 cores if my rendering looks like this:

Looks like may be a classic Andrew Kramer Earth Zoom to me? Nice!

If I'm right with the above, maybe your're just starting out with After Effects. Sorry its rendering performance is dissapointing. Believe me, it's been this way for a long time!

 

If you really want to squeeze as much out of your machine as possible, you can actually fire up multiple instances of After Effects and have them all render the same project simultaneously. It's a little bit of a PITA to set up, but might be worthwhile.

 

First you need to set up your render to save to an image sequence.

Then you need to go into your render settings and enable the checkbox: "Skip existing files (allows multi-machine rendering)".
Now start rendering in your current AE instance.
Next up we are going to fire up another instance of AE. This is how I used to do it on Mac (an old guide ). But since you're on PC just google around a bit, maybe try this method
So once your second instance of AE is running, load up your project and hit render again.
What's going to happen is AE's render will look at the render destination and any frames that are already rendered it will skip and move on to the next one that hasnt been rendered yet.

So now you have 2 AE's rendering your project!
Heck why not fire up a couple more instances!? It's like you have a little render farm inside your multi core beast 😈.

Without any info about your project we can't tell you much. That said, everything looks perfectly normal. AE has never behaved much different due to how it works internally. Many effects and functions simply are barely multithreaded and don't use parallel processing just like GPU acceleration is limited in AE. A classic case of expectation vs. reality.
