AF CS6 will not render to H.264

Thanks in advance for your help.
I've been using After Effect CS6 for years, recently doing short vidios for Instgram. MY issus is trying to export from the render queue in other than .avi format. My output module is lossless, output settings under format are set to AVI.
If I click the dropdown and select H.264 (this is how I been able to get mp4 compression for years) I get an error symbol "saying settings mismatch". If I click on the error symbol I get this..."Warning. Output will be resized from 1080x1080 (1.00PAR) to 320x1080 (4.50 PAR) to meet format constraints.
So this makes AE usless to me. I need to be able to export mp4, can anyone help?

Sounds like something busted up your CoDecs liek installing some alternate media player or another media creation app that messes up CS6's old, old stuff. Depending on what's important to you you may need to get rid of whatever this is and reinstall AE. Otherwise change your workflow and render out uncompressed files to be encoded in another tool, which on the face of it may make even more sense, given how optimized with GPU acceleration and such this all has become in recent years, none of which CS6 was particularly good at.
