Question

After efects 2020 GUI performance is slow and can’t open old After Effects projecs

I have a PC with Windows 10 a AMD Ryzen 9 3900X  3.8GHz ~ 4.6GHz / 12 Cores, 24 Threads  a 64 gb off ram and a Nvidea GTX 1070 Ti with 8gb of ram and my After Effects  2020 is Slow at 4k. Working in the software is not smooth.  I have a 14 seconds simple composition with just camera lens blur and it takes more than an hour to render. I also notice that it renders a little bit faster if I set the render close the program and open just to render. Another thing is that I can’t open old After Effects projects I have from cs6 for example.

Can you post some screen shots of the error messages that you're seeing when you try to open an After Effects project that originated in CS6?

There are several reasons that an older project file might not open as expected in a newer version of After Effects ranging from corrupted project files to missing fonts to missing effects to source footage that can no longer be decompressed (among other things).

A very common issue right now centers around QuickTime files that used to open just fine, but will not open at all in the current version.

As far as performance goes, have you run one of the benchmark projects made available online?  Puget Systems has one and there's another one available via Vimeo called "After Effects Performance Test File on Vimeo".

4K has a way of making your brand new machine feel like it's 5 years old.

Also, with After Effects, even though there are ongoing performance improvements, you still want fewer, faster cores.

I can’t post a screen shoot of the error message since I open the old After Effects CS6 project in the 2019 version save it and delete the old one which I couldt open in After Effects 2020.

I run the benchmark from Puget Systems in after effects 2020 and is fine I get good results, but I don’t know why After Effects 2020 version 17.0.4 (build59) GUI especially the comp window is slow, the 2019 version is faster also to render. My computer is not old I have the latest Nvidea drivers, but in version 2020 when I try to move the play head from one frame to another it think for several seconds before showing me the new one. The render times are also slow in 2020. I see that othe people are having performance isues on version 2020

Hi renzoortiz,

Issue 1: Were you able to work with older versions of After Effects without these performance issues? Is it specific to the 2020 version?

This might happen if there are a lot of cache files so you might want to clear that by going to Edit > Purge > All Memory & Disk Cache.

Issue 2: What's the problem you're facing while opening older projects? Are you getting any error messages?

Let us know, we're here to help.

I installed after effects 2019 and evething works fine, in after effects 2020 the cache files and memory are empty but dosent solve my persormance problem. There is not realtime on my comp window, it freezes in one frame and when I move to another frame it continues frozen for a moment after after effects display the new frame. Sometimes renders with just one effect as lense blur take long time to render a 15 4k second clip. Is there a problem with my Nvidea 8gb GTX 1070 Ti and after effects version 17.0.4 (build59)?

the isue 2 when I oppen a cs6 projects it says that after effects can open that file I tried with after effects 2019 and is fine.

I also uninstal affter effecst 2020 and make a fresh install and is the same thing.
