Question

After Effeccts extremely slow with playback of R3D files

Hello!

I'm running AE 23.4.0 on a Mac Studio 2022 with Apple M1 Ultra and 128 GB Ram (116 allocated to CC)

OS: Ventura 13.4

While working on a project, After Effects suddenly had a massive drop in performance with R3D files (6k). While it was playing back at full resolution close to real time, all of a sudden, it takes around 8 seconds to play back a single frame. There are no effects on the file, nothing has been done to it. Pristine as freshly fallen snow.

I tried the obvious:

- restarting the program,  rebooting the Mac,

- clearing caches,

- deinstalling and reinstalling the same version of AE, updating to the newest version (always without migrating previous settings).

- Updating the OS, reinstalling the newest version of AE again.

- I tried to work from a different drive, and also with my files and project on the internal drive.

- I ran it with software only and with GPU, same, same, no difference.

- I tried the safe modus of the newes AE version (23.4.0), also no change.

Weirdly, Premiere is handling the same files without any problem, at full resolution.
The problem occured when I sent a file from Premiere to AE. But it persists with a fresh, AE only project also.

I'm running out of ideas. I'd be very grateful for help.

I'm having very similar problems, with the addition that if I try to play back R3D files at any resolution/debayer other that "Full," many of the frames will playback with a bright pink overlay or a solid pink screen.

You seem to be encountering the same problem. I had the funky pink screen as well when playing back at half or 1/3rd resolution. Strangely, 1/4 worked without the overlay.
I had a lengthy process with Adobes specialists and after spending several hours with remote access to my system, and them being able to reproduce the problem on a similar system, they informed me that they forwarded the information towards the development team, and that they hopefully will have a fix with the next release.

THANK YOU for that information! At least that saves me the trouble of having to go through the same support process - but that's actually really great to know that it worked for you at 1/4, I will give that a shot in the meantime
