Question

After Effect video not able to render fully

Hello,

This is my spec:

Windows 10 Home

Processor: Intel Core i7-4770K CPU @ 3.5GHz

RAM: 16GB

64 bit OS

I downloaded After Effects CC (2017)

When I play a video file after import, the green bar in the timeline does not complete. The video would play itself but it would stop after 10 seconds or so and restart from the beginning. As a result, the green bar never completes itself unless I render in lowest setting.

I already freed up some disk space (I'm on a 250 GB SSD drive), and have about 20 GB reserved for disk cache, but problem persists.

Can someone help me?

Thanks

Hi,

Did you make sure that the preview settings was same in all the three Preview you have mentioned i.e. Preview Resolution, Frame Rate, Audio Option, Skip Frames etc. Note that the Frame Rate & Preview Resolution is set to Auto, so should make sure that you switch them manually to a fixed Value.

There will be a small difference in number of Frames CS6 version preview than the  CC 2017 or 2018 version because AE CC 2017 & 18 uses Min Memory of 1 GB whereas CS6 require only 0.40 GB.

Here is the Screenshots of the test I have done on all the three version of After Effects on the same system (Intel Xeon 2.20 GHZ, 16 GB RAM , HDD, Integrated graphic card) using the same project. There as only 53 frame more in CS6  between the CS6 & CC 2017 RAM Preview and 31 frames more in CS6 between the CS6 & CC 2018 RAM Preview. (I did this test almost for 3-4 times and got similar results).

I have the exact same problem but I don't fully understand the solutions being given in and around various forums. People are basically saying if you want longer RAM previews you should get more RAM. I have a few problems with this solution...

1) If I run CS6 on the same machine it previews my entire 30 sec composition. I can even double that length. It takes a while but if need be I can preview a massive comp with effects for playback.

2) I have just moved to an 8 Core Mac Pro with 16 GB Ram, my older machine (Mac Pro 2010 with 16 GB Ram) previewed the entire 30  sec composition in CC 2017. My new machine only does 18 sec in CC 2017

Thanks for sharing the Screenshot..You need to change the preview resolution to half or third in program window or allocate more RAM to get the cached playback of more frames.

Although its the simple effect but because of resolution of composition is set to Full HD with 60 FPS it requires more space for each Frame in RAM.

You can even check RAM usage by going to Preferences > Memory > Details...with the current frames cached in timeline you should see the Current Memory to be around 9.5 to 9.8 GB with Max allowed RAM set to 11 GB because around 1.5 GB RAM is saved for After Effects to run smoothly.

If you will change the MAX Allowed RAM to 13 GB or so than you would be able to get a longer cached playback than before. (not recommend if you would work with multiple software at the same time)

As per the screenshot of timeline shared by you AE is creating  disk cache as well for Playback represented in blue color.

So you can let  AE cache rest of the frames in disk cache or you can take a proxy render of your composition to preview in Realtime.

Some screenshots:

See the green bar below? It will never move to the right and complete itself. But do I need to wait for it to complete? The video file I'm working with is a .mp4 file.

The Audio file I'm working with is .wav

Thanks

Screen shot of After Effects with timeline, Program , & Preview panel in view would be more helpful.

But remember cache preview playback depends on many factors (effects, Input Video, Frame Rate, Resolution) and finally the RAM in system..so you can check the following settings for longer preview with limited RAM -

1. Check current available disk space in your drive

2. Check memory allocated to After Effects out of 16 GB (you can check that in preferences under memory).

3. You can set the Preview Panel settings to skip frames & Set the resolution to Auto or Half for longer Cache Preview.

4. If your using RayTrace render than try changing to cinema 4D render.

5. Create proxy of Input Media
