After Effects 17.1.4 is now live!

After Effects 17.1.4 is now available for download from the Creative Cloud desktop application. This update adds two new enhancements and contains several bug-fixes.

What's new?

  • The Channel Combiner and Channel Effects are now GPU accelerated
  • Motion Graphic templates that utilize the Roto Brush Effect can now be imported into Premiere Pro

What's fixed?

  • The Create Shapes from Vector Layer command is now disabled for Illustrator layers if the source file is missing
  • Bug fixes for the Median effect when rendering transparent pixels: alpha channel edges render correctly in 32-bpc color, and layers that are completely transparent no longer return an error message, “Photoshop Library operation failed”
  • Fixed an issue where using shape stroke taper was generating a spike at start and end points
  • Fixed an issue with Master Properties that was causing the push and pull buttons to be grayed out after keyframe interpolation changes
  • Fixed an issue where adding dropdown menu items to existing Motion Graphics templates and replacing in Premiere was resetting previous selections
  • Fixed an issue in the Echo effect, where it could produce garbage pixels in output

Hello everyone.

Yesterday I was working normally with AE and today after the update it keeps crashing on startup.

It seems to crash always at Cleaning Up - AEDynamicLinkServer

Hey Benedict Kat,

Have you tried updating to After Effects 17.5?

"Crashing at random" ...

I've now had the rather strange experience of being unable to open a project on any version of AFX 17, yet the project opens and works perfectly in V16.1.3.

Strange thing is, the project was created in 17.1.4.

Any thoughts?

That's really weird, jamess58689946.

Have you tried 17.5? If it's still happening, would you be able to share the project file with us so that we can test it on our end?

Thanks,

Rameez

I've already had contact with your help desk via Twitter conversation. I've
now moved to 17.5 clean install, and things seem to be ok so far. 2 days.
For future reference, I'm wondering what is the best way to contact for
support? NOT bot-driven...
Cheers...

I'm having issues ever since this update too.

So a few days ago I updated all my Adobe programs including After Effects (v17.1.14 (build 37)) and everything seemed fine. (can't say with certainty since I didn't work much in it) Friday, I updated my MacOS to Catalina v10.15.7 and ever since then my After Effects has become almost unusable. The same workfile that previously worked just fine suddenly becomes incredible slow. I can barely RAM preview and even just going through the timeline is a major effort. Even if I change the preview resolution down to Half, nothing really changes.

If you look at the Known issues link in the original posting it says:

"Issue: After Effects v17.1.4 crashes at random.

Workaround: Roll back to the previous version 17.1.3 of After Effects using the steps in this article. We are actively working to resolve this issue."

Hi,

latest version started again to display the "could not open source file. Please check that file exists with correct permissions. (86 :: 1)" when trying to import files from an external drive. I'm on Windows 10 pro, files are prores proxies and before update were importing correctly. I have admin permissions.  Tried several solutions (re-install quicktime and codecs, copy to local drive, etc...) but nothing works. Please fix.  I have a deadline and a lot of files to import, please fix this!

EDIT: I forgot to mention the files are exported from Compressor, from what I'm reading a different file format ("apcs" instead of "whihc") could be the problem. Is there a workaround to avoid re-transcoding everything?

Do you experience the same behavior on After Effects 17.5, andy-mario?

Much like the others in the thread, I'm also experiencing frequent crashes. Seemingly every 15- 20mins whilst working. AE will sometimes sit in the background without crashing but soon after starting work again it will revert back to its frequent crashes. I am sending crash reports back every time this happens.

Updated to After Effects 17.5 yet, MACMC?

Feel free to share the crash logs here so that we can investigate what's going on exactly.

Thanks,

Rameez

I've not updated just yet (out of office) but will try early next week. Have you had any reports that this issue has persisted in 17.5?

Thanks for the constant random crashing update. Curious why haven't you guys implemented a recovery system?

I have multiple commisions due and these constant random crashes are getting me super behind. I can't even downgrade bc it messes with my projects. windows 10 and not at startup. I couldn't tell you what is causing it because it is never consistent by about 3-5 times an hour. If this is going to be the norm then you guys need to implement a recovery system or better test before you put it out.

Have you noticed whether or not the crashes happen when autosave kicks in? That's what's happening to me and it's occurring 3-4 times an hour but I can't figure out how to stop it. I don't even have autosave turned on but I see it kick in with the "Saving..." window immediately before each crash. Turned it off and reset preferences numerous times and yet it persists. I'm about to miss a client deadline myself due to this so I feel your pain.

Sorry about this, CoLLHaRD.

Try disabling your anti-virus software and firewall temporarily and see if that fixes the problem.

Thanks,
