After Effects 2026 and Beta (Both) Freezes the Preview on 3D Camera with RTX 5080(Ryzen 9 9950X) – Driving Me Nuts!

Hey everyone,

I've been using After Effects for years without issues, but lately, whenever I add a 3D camera layer to a comp, the preview just freezes solid. I have a 3D button enabled on all the layers. I have two viewports open too – one with an active camera, another with a custom 3-view camera. It throws this annoying "using processor graphics" error even though I've got a beastly RTX 5080. Sometimes it shows this message and sometimes it doesn't—just stuck the preview. This wasn't happening before—everything was smooth. After Effects keeps telling me it's using your processor graphics after I disable it on the Device Manager—there is no effect to it. It still gets stuck and won't preview at all. Super frustrating for my motion graphics work!

How to Reproduce (Easy to Test)

  1. Open any project or new comp.

  2. Layer > New > Camera (make it 3D).

  3. Hit spacebar or 0 to preview—instant freeze with the graphics warning.

My Setup

  • After Effects 2026 (fully updated)

  • Windows 11

  • CPU: Ryzen 9 9950X

  • GPU: RTX 5080 (latest Studio drivers, even did a clean DDU install)

  • 64GB DDR5 RAM

  • Dual monitors

What I've Tried (Nothing Works)

  • Switched Mercury Playback to Software Only

  • Set 3D Renderer to Classic 3D

  • Purged all caches multiple times

  • Reset preferences on launch

  • Toggled hardware acceleration

  • Disabled Multi-Frame Rendering

  • Reinstalled AE completely, updated everything

My workflow is totally blocked. Is this a known RTX 50-series issue? Anyone else seeing this on high-end rigs? Desperate for a fix or workaround—thanks in advance! 😩

Thanks for sharing this. That definitely sounds frustrating, especially on a high-end setup like yours.

To help narrow this down, could you try a couple of things:

    • Does it happen in a specific project or all the projects? Can you test on a new project without importing any media?

    • Try a different NVIDIA driver version (Studio vs Game Ready, or even rolling back one version)

    • Does it still freeze if you remove the 3D camera or simplify the scene?

Also, can you go to After Effects Preferences> Memory & CPU > click GPU Information and share a screenshot? Looking forward to your response.

    Thanks,
    Nishu

    Thanks for the reply, Nishu!

    Quick Tests I Did:

    • New project/no media: With a new project, if I add a camera, it gets stuck; if I remove the camera layer, the preview doesn't work. So not project or media specific.

    • Different NVIDIA drivers: Already tried the latest Studio Driver. Game Ready also freezes. Happy to try more specifics if you recommend!

    • Remove 3D c

amera/simplify: Without camera, preview fine initially, but even basic 3D layer + camera (no other elements) freezes preview.

GPU Screenshot: Here's from Preferences > Memory & Multiprocessing > GPU Info. (Attached image.jpg) Shows RTX 5080 detected but falling back

to processor graphics on 3D stuff.
