After Effects 24.0.3 Kernel Panic on Sonoma 2019 Intel Macbook

  • November 22, 2023

As title states - been having this issue since updating OS. After Effects will randomly freeze the whole OS and my Mac will blackscreen to a "your mac has shut down because of a probelm". When restarted, After Effects will not open: giving me a window about preferences. It will take me roughly 6 attemps every time to have this message stop so I can actually boot the programme again. Tried the fixes about document acess in another thread, but this was not needed as permissions were already granted.

Done a fresh install of Sonoma and wiped all files, and all aplications. Still hasn't fixed the issue.

Specs if they help: 2.4 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9, AMD Radeon Pro 5500M 8 GB, 32 GB 2667 MHz DDR4

You mentioned doing a fresh install of macOS, but was that on a separate volume?

For what it's worth, on my work machines I stay back one full version of After Effects and one full version of macOS.

Since the Adobe subscription plan allows us to have both After Effects 23.6 and 24.1 installed at the same time, that's pretty easy.  Of course with macOS, that's not so easy.  For Big Sur I waited for 11.4, for Monterey I waited for 12.4, and for Ventura I waited for 13.5.

If I was experiencing this issue, I'd install macOS Ventura on a separate boot drive and continue from there.

Hello, as stated, permissions are granted. The hardware test brings no faults. And again, as stated I already did a clean install, and it did not help. I shouldn't have to waste another day doing a time machine backup, and then downgrading my OS. It baffles me that software this expensive is so unstable, especially on Mac OS. However I do also understand that Apple is a massive pain with treating their Intel based machines...

@SamMango

How confident are you that After Effects has read and write access to all the necessary folders?

Since you are getting a kernel panic while After Effects is in Safe Mode, you'll want to run the Apple Hardware Test.

Being that this is an Intel based Mac, I'd take the time to create an external boot drive that has just a clean install of macOS, Adobe Creative Cloud Desktop, Adobe After Effects, and Adobe Media Encoder as part of troubleshooting this issue.

It's possible that you may need to remain at macOS Ventura 13 for more stable performance until macOS Sonoma gets to a higher version number.

Hey mate, I start in safe mode every time and it does nothing to prevent the kernal panic. Since posting I have had it crash my laptop 4 times in a row within 5 minutes of use. I'll post a screenshot when I next get the error message tomorrow.

Hi SamMango,

Sorry to hear about the crash.

Have you tried running After Effects in Safe Mode? Do you mind sharing a screenshot of the error message that you get about the preferences?

We're here to help.

Thanks,

Nishu
