Question

After Effects 25.3/4 freezing and crashing

Hello, I'm having a sudden issue arise within After Effects today, whenever I am scrubbing through the timeline or hitting play to preview. The viewport freezes completely on a static frame even though all UI and functions seem to continue to work as normal and can be selected, shortly after this I will get a not responding notice at the top of the window which continues indefinitely until I force close.

I have tried updating to the latest version of AE, rolling back as well updating/rolling back my drivers. Strangely nothing has changed on my device between the last session working in AE (the day before) yet these issues have suddenly appeared in any project file newly created or already exisiting.

I have also tried changes in preferences and project settings (multi frame rendering, CUDA to mercury, etc) but I'm having no luck. Lastly I've tried a fresh install of After effects but no change to the problem, unsure of what else to try or the sudden cause for this repeating problem. Any help here would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you

I've been having the same issues also on a brand new laptop - basically your spec, just a bit more RAM.

I went through everything, all the basic fixes that you advised to do; update AE and all drivers, removed plugins, fresh install, settings inside AE, turning off setting in the NVidia app for games, trying the Nnvidia creation driver over the game driver...literally I can't really remember everything I've done there's been so much and yet it was still happening, in a single comp with 3 PNGs and a bit of audio. Frozen viewport but the rest of the UI worked fine, even saving the file.

In the end I installed the oldest version 24 and there's been no issue (hopefully I've not jixed it).

I've used Adobe products for years and I should know by now...don't use the most up to date version.

It seemes that the issue is related to the driver version of the graphic card. It is harder to find the solution if it happens randomly. It would be the best choice to use the latest version of the graphic card.

If you're using an Nvidia GPU, you can download and install the latest GPU driver from here: https://adobe.ly/4mxPJZZ

If updating the driver doesn't help, try disabling Nvidia G-Sync.

Let me know the outcome.

Thanks,

I've seen a few similar reports. Sorry about the issue. What version of the GPU driver are you using? Can you check if disabling the Nvidia G-Sync helps?

Let me know.

Thanks,
Nishu

I have the same problem on a 5090... its very frustrating, and completely random. I hope there is a fix very soon.
