Question

After effects and Media Encoder not using GPU or eGPU to render

Hi there,

I am Usinc a Macbook Pro (2019, 2.4 GHz 8-Core i9, with 32Gb) connected to an eGPU (AMD Radeon RX 580). Running macOS Ventura (13.0.1) and Running the latest AE (23.0.0) and ME (23.0.1).

Im rendering an After effects project through Mendia Encoder - and the fans of my Mac went off the charts - but the rendering is progressing at a very mediocre speed...

I then went to Avtivity Monitor to discover that the internal GPU and eGPU are not being used at all... everything is being done by the CPU.

I talked to Apple, and they said everything is plugged correctly and it is a software problem - and "it seems like the Adobe software isn't making proper use of the hardware"...

Any ideas??

I'm not a technical person at all, so I'm completely out of my depth here...

Thanks in advance!!

Some of your render settings may be preventing the use of your video card.

For example VBR 2-pass can't use hardware acceleration.

Without any info about the contents of the project and the exact render settings we can't tell you anything. Many things in AE simply barely use any GPU acceleration an the behavior could be perfectly normal depending on what you use.
