Question

After Effects can't open .MOV files and gives "This file is damaged or unsupported"

I know this is duplicate but, the problem is not solved and it's not totally the same problem.

The problem goes like that:-

When I import a .MOV file into After Effects it shows me this error first:-

Nothing in the internet solves this issue so far. But again after I press OK it gives this (Drum Roll):-

When I click OK nothing happens and the file doesn't get imported;

I'm using the latest version of After Effects

which is 17.0.5 (Build 16) I just updated it yesterday

What I have tried so far:-

  1. Downloaded QuickTime player from Apple.com
  2. Made QuickTime my default player for .MOV files and restarted my computer after that
  3. Changed file type from .MOV to .mp4 but it just doesn't work and it gives me the same error except instead of "this .mov file" it gives "this .mp4"
  4. Tried tons of different codecs and changed/re-rendered them with Adobe Media Encoder

Any suggestions so far?

Thanks in advance

Hi there,

Thanks for reaching out. Take a look at the following article from information regarding this issue: https://community.adobe.com/t5/after-effects/unable-to-import-h-264-h-265-files-after-updating-to-after-effects-17-0-5/m-p/10997790?page=1

Let us know if there are any other questions.

Thanks,

So, to clarify, this happens with absolutely any Quicktime file you throw at AE?  Or just the one file?

Does the file play in any other application or media player?

You say you "Tried tons of different codecs and changed/re-rendered them with Adobe Media Encoder."  So the file is visible in Media Encoder?  If you convert to another format altogether, like MXF or even mp4, does it them work?

I just found out that After Effects stopped supporting H.264 and H.265 format videos.

Now answering your questions:-

  1. Yes any QuickTime file
  2. Yes it plays and it even plays in Premiere
  3. Yes it's visible in AME
  4. Nope, it doesn't work when I convert it to .mp4

I just found out about this thread after I posted here sorry https://community.adobe.com/t5/after-effects/can-t-import-videos-after-updating-to-17-0-5-build-16/td-p/10990351?page=2
