One of the precomps in the sequence must've been corrupt, because when I would send it to encoder, it would freeze and not get past this one precomp. so i deleted the precomp and tried another render. and had no more crashes after that. (I also had a .wav file that had tons of embedded premiere markers on it, and i manually removed the markers in AE. think that mightve helped?)
