Question

After Effects CC 2018 using 100% CPU/very little RAM

Hello all,

I've been having some real slow performance issues with the most current version of After Effects. After updating I've noticed that as soon as I open up my project file my CPU usage immediately spikes to 100% and stays there as long as I have the program open, while my RAM stays at around 18% (6gb) even though my settings give After Effects the ability to use quite a lot more (32gb). My GPU also seems to be staying at a lower usage, usually staying between 0-5% even when previewing footage.

I've been troubleshooting on my own and making sure everything about the PC is operating fine. It seems to be some issue with the software, but I have not been able to find any threads that address the issue I've been having. Any feedback or insight would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

This appears to be happening to me too. Only seems to have began within the last week or so.

You have not provided any useful details like actual system info, contents of the project, how they were created, exact settings for caches, previews etc.. Nobody can help you based on such generic "Ihave a problem" posts.

Thanks for your response and for the affable tone it was delivered with

    I'm running After Effects CC 2018 (15.1)

    Windows 10

    Intel i7 6700k (4.0 GHz)

    32gb RAM

    Nvidia GTX 1080 GPU

My cache is set to 120GB on a separate SSD

My texture memory for GPU Fast Drafting is set to 5600MB (approx. 70% of my GPU's usable memory)

This is a newer project file at currently only contains around 15 4k video shots that I've been tracking, keying, and rotoscoping, no other elements are being involved yet.

I can make a new comp of the footage and play it through at full with no issue, but the moment I Key it, or apply any other filter/adjustments, the system struggles to playback at even a quarter. I've been working with similar project files on the same machine for about 6 months and have not had these issues until the 15.0.1 update, shortly after I noticed my CPU being used disproportionately compared to RAM and GPU.

I am observing/experiencing this scenario as well:

    Relevant Hardware:

    • 7th-generation Intel Core i7-7700HQ quad-core 2.8GHz (Turbo to 3.8GHz)
    • Discrete NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 4GB graphics
    • 1TB 7200RPM HDD
    • 8GB DDR4 Memory

I am brand new to AE and as a result my scenario could be attributed to PBKAC (Problem Between Keyboard And Chair), and that is what I believed until I began reading that others are having like observations.
