After Effects Crash / Freeze

Hi, I'm on the latest version of Adobe After Effects and for weeks it has been crashing on me. It's driving me insane and totally stopped me working.

The composition viewer either shows nothing, or freezes after about a minute of work. Importing images into a composition just locks the screen.

I've changed my Project Settings to Mercury Software Only as this fixed a crash bug I had in Premiere Pro and someone suggested that also fixed their crashes in AE.

I've gone into the program and user files and renamed my Adobe After Effects folders to '.old' as this is also supposed to fix the problem. It hasn't.

My laptop set up and Windows version details:

Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-10510U CPU @ 1.80GHz 2.30 GHz
Installed RAM 64.0 GB (63.8 GB usable)
System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor

Edition Windows 10 Pro
Version 20H2
Installed on ‎24/‎03/‎2021
OS build 19042.1237

Anyone any ideas as to how to fix the issue? Many thanks in advance.

I had to get IT involved in the end - they tried all the bits I did, then settled on a full reinstall of the graphics drivers. They found a few corrupted Windows files that "may have had something to do with the problem". Everything working OK now though, which is a relief!

I have an Intel UHD Graphics card - is that a potential conflict?

Hi Mills_M,

Not the GPU but its driver could be. What's the version of its driver that you installed? Do not rely on Windows to update the driver. I'd suggest you do it from the manufacuter's website.

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks,

Nishu

The same old boring answer: UPdate your graphics driver, check your hardware acceleration settings. Clearly the GPU bufferrs are not flushing correctly and after a short period get clogged up so the driver and in turn AE crashes...

Many thanks for the reply, @Mylenium - I've gone through the settings, dumped the cache, purged ram, checked driver updates etc. Still freezing on me. I've dedicated 58 GB ram too. Nothing seems to be working.
