Question

After Effects freeze/crash

Hi,

This is my very first time using After Effects, and I’m already completely stuck. I’m working on a very basic project (just resizing a clip inside another, no effects or animation), and AE freezes as soon as I try to scale a layer. After a short moment, it crashes with a message like "Unable to allocate memory (7000MB)", even though I have 32GB of RAM.

My setup: RTX 3060, 32GB RAM (dual channel), Intel i5 12th gen, fast SSD, latest Studio Drivers installed.

I’ve already tried everything, including all the steps in your startup troubleshooting page:
https://community.adobe.com/t5/after-effects-discussions/how-to-troubleshoot-startup-issues-in-after-effects-using-the-startup-repair-options/td-p/13866327

Plus:

  • Safe Mode launch

  • Purged all memory + disk cache

  • Changed cache folders

  • Disabled GPU acceleration (Mercury, hardware panels, etc.)

  • Lowered RAM usage (24GB AE / 8GB other apps)

  • Set preview resolution to Quarter

  • Tested both AE 2024 and AE 2025 → same problem

Premiere Pro runs perfectly on my machine. The issue is only with After Effects.

I really need direct help from a technician. Please don’t send me standard tips—I’ve already tried everything.

Thanks in advance 🙏

Thanks for reaching out and sharing the details, Jadeo_Iannello0591.

Could you provide some details about the Comp and the media you're using? What's the resolution of the Composition (Composition menu > Composition Settings) and the resolution of the media file? The error you're seeing usually means that the current frame needs more memory than After Effects can allocate. If you have media that large in resolution, try optimizing it.

Looking forward to your response. Moving this thread from Bugs to Discussions for troubleshooting.

Thanks,
Nishu

Hi Nishu,

I'm experiencing a similar issue for the first time today.  64GB RAM with 12Gb NVidia GPU.

I'm working with 4k comps and 4k footage for keying - nothing I've not done dozens of times before and the whole computer is locking up - not even able to move the mouse.  The desktop even loses its background image.

I've made videos on improving previewing and fixing crashes, so you know I've tried everything.

It seems like there is a conflict with Windows 11 maybe?  I saw that because I've rolled back to 25.2 and the problem persists.

In Task Manager, the memory is running 100% and the GPU is not being used at all.
