Question

After Effects freezes every time I try to make a precomp or open up an exisiting composition

This is the most frusterating problem I've ever encountered on After Effects as it renders the program utterly useless to me, and I can't get any work done. I've tried everything and looked everywhere online for an answer but I've found nothing. It freezes every single time I try to open up a composition or create a precomp and I have to force quit the program.

Sorry for your issue. Please share the following details so that we can troubleshoot the issue proeprly.

  • What are your system specifications (CPU, GPU, RAM, OS)?
  • Does it happen only with the existing projects or with new projects as well?
  • Is it all the panels or just the Composition panel that doesn't respond?

Hi Nishu,

System specs:

- iMac Pro (2017)

- OS: Big Sur V11.4

- Processor: 3GHz 10-Core Intel Xeon W

- Memory: 64 GB 2666 MHz DDR4

- Graphics: Radeon Pro Vega 64 16 GB

 

The problem happens with both new and existing projects. And it's all the panels - the entire program. I'll get the spinning color wheel mouse, right click on the program and see that the program isn't responding. It will stay like that until I force quit the program.

Could you try updating After Effects to the latest version? If that doesn't help, please try resetting the preferences: https://community.adobe.com/t5/after-effects-discussions/faq-how-to-reset-trash-preferences-in-after-effects/td-p/10634342
