After Effects Freezes/ Stops responding when I import a clip and try to do anything to it.

I got After effects yesterday and it seemed to be working fine for the first hour or so. Now when i import a clip into a comp it freezes. When I do manage to get the footage into the comp, 90% of the time the video preview does not show, only the transform dots. My system specs are:

CPU - Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3470 CPU @ 3.20GHz

Memory - 8.0 GB DDR3

Disk  - ST500DM002-1BD142 - 466 GB

I don't think the RAM is the problem though because before it freezes, the RAM is never above 60%. Also when I go onto System Compatibilty Report, it says there are no conflicts to report.

We need more info but first reset the preferences:

Press Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac OS) while launching After Effects. You can release the Alt or Option key when the splash screen appears.

To reset preferences and plug-in cache at the same time, hold down Control-Shift-Alt (Windows) or Command-Shift-Option (Mac OS) while the application is starting. Release the keys when the splash screen appears.

What kind of footage are you working on? Detailed specs please, because effectively looks like a Ram issue.

I have tried to import a mp4 and avi video, but neither worked. Both are 30fps.
