After effects Import Issue

Hey everyone, slight issue here.

A client sent me their logo as a transparent PNG which I imported into illustrator and turned into a vector. I imported the vector into after effects to turn into a spinning logo. 

After I imported this, I converted it to a shape layer but instead of being a shape layer all I got was a grey block and every time I attempt this with other logo files I keep getting a grey block and I don't know how to get the file as a shape. I assumed it was an issue with the display and exported it as normal thinking I'd see the full logo but I get is a rotating grey block.

Anyone have any advice on how to get past this? Thank you!
