After Effects Mocha won't paste shape data correctly

I am trying to mask out some of my footage using AE Mocha. ive copied the shape data to the clipboard and pasted it into a shape. but the data won't mask out the footage, it only appears as a shape? how do I fix this?

In AE go to Edit > Paste mocha Mask. If you use the Paste command, you will get a mocha shape effect applied to your layer instead of native AE mask.
