after effects Preview not showing

• Is it happening with a particular file or any file that you import?
• What if you create a Solid layer? Do you see the preview?
• What are your system specifications (CPU, GPU, RAM)?

After effects didn't recognize the video, check if it's not corrupted, or maybe the codec is not supported. If you can, try to convert that movie into prores using a video conversion software and reimport it again into AE
