Question

After effects render fail on specific frame

When I try to render my edit that I've made, it makes progress up until one specific frame of the video and then it gives me a sheep sound and says "After Effects error: Unknown Exception"

I've try restarting my laptop multiple times but it didn't work for a couple times after effects would crash even previewing that frame but it doesn't anymore and it only crashes when rendering that frame, and I didn't do anything special to that frame or clip, it had only a handful of effects that I've also used for other clips that work fine. here are my specs:

RAM : 4GB

CPU: Intel i5

GPU: Nvidia MX130

I know it's easy to think it's a hardware issue but the reason why I doubt that is because I was able to preview that frame just fine a few hours ago even with apps in the background so it's strange how it's unable to render it now

Previews are not full quality rendered frames - so even if something shows up fine in the preview, that doesn't mean it will render out.  Have you tried:

  • rendering an image sequence - that way you only have to render new frames?
  • Removing the effects from the video for that frame?  That would show you if the problem is the source or the effects.
  • Checking the error log for clues?  If it is the source, then try rendering that video without effects through Media Encoder or Handbrake - that might fix the problem.

I would start by checking the footage and also clean out the disk caches. Perhaps there's some damaged frame data somewhere.
