After Effects rendering POORLY on MacStudio Ultra 128 RAM since upgrading to SONOMA 14.1.1

Hello. I have an old MacBook Pro 2016 with Monterey 12.7.1. And a new MacStudio M1 Ultra with 128 Gb RAM using Sonoma 14.1.1.

The moment I installed Sonoma on the Ultra, After Effects (new and old versions) renders SO badly, I have to use the MacBook to get my work done. Naturally this slows down my work by 30 fold, and makes my M1 Ultra investment useless. Attached is a screen shot of how the M1 Ultra Sonoma is rendering with all the glitches. I uninstalled and re-installed AE of various versions to test. No improvement.

I do not dare upgrade Sonoma to the new 14.1.2 becuase it just mentions security updates.

Some online help is old and refers to error messages etc, and the procedure to clear those seems impossible because certain files/folders cannot be found on my system. Thank you.

Hello Warren, thanks. I will try. Meanwhile, would what you say make sense in terms of the very same file rendering perfectly well on the old OS using an old MacBook Pro. The difference is the introduction of Sonoma.

That type of macro-blocking (the picture breaking up into large squares) is usually the result of the source footage not holding up to being rendered.

What do your renders look like if you create something from scratch in After Effects?  For example, create a 5 second Comp at 1920-by-1080, apply one of the "Backgrounds" Animation Presets (Effects & Presets > *Animation Presets > Backgrounds), and then render that to Best Settings / High Quality and Best Settings / H264 - Match Render Settings - 15 Mbps.

Hello and thanks for your reply. I tried a range of options, and none worked, including HW only or SW only. I created the most basic Comp with just one word moving around the screen, and that rendered ok. Though it has no effects whatsoever, and is a small file. Strange that the same file renders perfectly on the old Mac and old OS, but runs into issues with the Sonoma from the day I upgraded. Cheers

I have definitely not seen corrupted output like that with MacOS 14/Sonoma but there are certainly other issues that the OS has been causing to AE.

Glitches like that might be related to the GPU hardware. You could try turning off hardware accelerated imports (in Preferences -> Import), perhaps try Mercury Software mode, though unclear if either of those will solve the problem.

If you make something simple, like some text moving around the screen, do you have the same issue?
