Question

After Effects shows font which isn't installed

I have the strangest problem: After Effects is showing me a font (Source Code) which isn't even installed on my Mac (and I've deactivated fontkit).

Since I need the font in all font-weights for a client I tried installing it. But After Effects still shows me the same 4 font-weights and is ignoring semi-bold (or all other new weights) which is the only version I need. It doesn't matter if I delete the font from my M1 Max or if I reinstall or if I try to synch via typekit. After Effects shows me the same 4 versions, but not the one I need - all other Adobe software like Premiere, Photoshop, Illustrator do show all font versions without a problem. On my older MB Pro it shows as well. And no other software has a problem with it, just After Effects.

So I've completely de-installed creative cloud, deleted the font (and font cache), deleted the remaining Adobe folders and com.adobe.* manually, de-activated type-kit... and when I start After Effects now after re-installing it now: Source Code is showing the same 4 font-weights (even though it's not installed) but not showing the font-weight which I need. So I'm wondering where is After Effects getting this font from?  (and just to be sure: the After Effects beta has the same problem) - it's frustrating.

Hi, I don't know if you ever found a solution for your issue, and I know it's been a long time since your post. But recently I had After Effects showing fonts that I believed weren't installed on my Mac until I realized they actually were installed but in another folder. So, just in case, this could help you (or someone else) somehow these are the different places I found fonts installed:

Hi davidh5751681,

Welcome to the community and sorry for your issue.

Are you able to use the font/style that is not installed but is available in After Effects? Also, does it happen with a particular font? What's the name of the font.

While uninstalling, did you manually remove the After Effects folder? There's a fonts folder in the After Effects install directory inside the Applications folder that can contain fonts.

Let us know.

Thanks,

Nishu

Hi Nishu,

thank you for your reply. The font is "Source Code Pro" - I can use regular, italic, bold and bold italic without the font being installed on my Mac. When I de-installed After Effects I also deleted all Adobe folders in library etc., deleted the cache, restarted several times - and if I'm looking right now there is no fonts folder in the After Effects install directory.

Since it's a new machine I'm not sure if it has ever worked but I in my opinion I have the problem since I tried to install the font with font-kit (which I have now de-activated - but still the font is showing and usable as above - so strange).  I need the font to be in semibold, right now a success would be the font not showing at all since it isn't installed anywhere 🙂

Just to add: I had the same problem with another font which was in font-kit but after deleting everything and re-installing the other font is working fine now.

Best,
David
