after effects sound very choppy

Unfortunately the recording tab is hiding the info panel, which might have given us a clue.  It's an odd sound though, but I'd guess that the audio is coded in a way AE cannot easily preview.  Try using Media Encoder to export it uncompressed, as a WAV file for example.
