After Effects won't open, freezes on "cleaning up smart mask interpolation"

Working on a Lenovo E580, windows 11.

After effects was working very slowly, so I updated it. I then updated my intel HD graphics driver as I saw it was out of date.

After this, with after effects and my graphics drivers updated, laptop restarted, it began to crash after a few seconds of  a file being open. Now it doesn't even launch, it freezes in the startup, no matter which version I uninstall and reinstall after effects in. it gets to  "cleaning up smart mask interpolation".

Really hope there's an easy solution as I have work to finish.

Try opening the Creative Cloud/Apps page and click on the three little dots to the right of the After Effects Open button. Click the dots, and you can roll back a build or two or even roll back a version by clicking on the Other Versions menu. That is my go-to fix whenever AE starts misbehaving after an update.
