Question

After Effects won't preview 4k footage (black screen)

My specs:

  • After Effects 2022
  • AMD Ryzen 5 Microsoft Surface (R) Edition 2.10 GHz
  • RAM 16.0 GB (14.0 GB usable)
  • System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
  • Windows 11 Home 21H2

After importing a 4k .mp4 video, the footage turns into a black screen. The audio plays just fine, but the preview is completely ruined and exports as a black screen. It renders as if there is no footage, despite the video playing fine outside of the program. When I tried to import the same footage but in 1080p quality, it was fine. This problem only happens whenever I try to use 2k or 4k videos. I tried everything, premiere pro and media encoder don't help. I tried changing the file extension, but after effects would then give me an "unsupported compression type" error. Is this an issue with my laptop not being powerful enough?

Would you also delete the old cache?

Hi Nour21771629txll,

16 GB RAM is the minimum that After Effects needs to run (recommended is 32 GB) which could lead to performance issues such as yours. However, we should not come to a conclusion before checking other factors as well.

  • Does it happen with particular footage or any 4K or 2K footage that you try to export?
  • Which device was used to capture the footage? Could you try importing a 4K footage from a different source?
  • Is there a dedicated GPU installed on your computer? If yes, what's the make and model?

We're here to help, just need more info.

Thanks,

Nishu
