After reloading all footage, things don't display properly/at all in the viewport

I'm working on an art piece so there's lots of stuff from photoshop - I decided to tweak a few things in photoshop and once done I selected everything in the project tab and reloaded all the footage. since then the viewport has been grey (nothing). the "frame render time" has been flashing green with 0ms forever, and the blue render bar thing in the viewport flashes occasionally. There are occasions i can view things, like if i solo some of the layers. but the thing is it's very random so sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. it feels bugged. I'm especially confused because if I double-click into the assets I can view them completely fine. it's just some pre-compositions and the main compositions that are bugged. I've deleted the cache, image memory, saving as a copy, but nothing. would greatly appreciate some support, it's quite an important project.
